We are deeply saddened to announce that Prof. Dr. István Mayer, professor emeritus of the Institute of Organic Chemistry, passed away on 12 January 2020 at the age of 77.
Prof. Dr. Mayer István, Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, honorary professor, was an internationally renowned scientist, a widely recognized expert of conceptual quantum chemistry. His research interest and activity focused on finding a relation between the physical and chemical description of molecules. He introduced and elaborated several new concepts and methods, such as CHA formalism, Mayer bond order and valence indices, which are broadly used in present-day quantum chemical studies. Some of his papers are real classics, and his book “Simple theorems, proofs and derivations in Quantum Chemistry” serves as an advanced textbook for everyone interested closely in basic formulation of quantum chemistry.
We mourn the loss of a brilliant scientist, a versatile personality, a warm-hearted and beloved colleague.
